HERE IS YOUR RECORDING FOR: Understanding the Difference between ADHD & High Sensitivity

Here is your recording of my conversation about”Anxiety & Overwhelm: Understanding the Difference between ADHD & High Sensitivity.” The background to this you’ll find after our recording (click on the picture of both of us below).

The 30 minute conversation was a fairly fast paced, energetic, thoughtful time with food for thought (that’s a combination of what we heard from those who listened during or after the show.)

Background/Reason for the Conversation

My original, before-the-conversation blog explains why we decided to get together.

“Anxiety & Overwhelm: Understanding the Difference between ADHD & High Sensitivity.” I would like to share what you can expect from the FB Live conversation Linda and I will have on July 29th, at 2:30 p.m. Eastern U.S. time.  Our intent is to discuss discuss in detail what each is – Highly Sensitive People and how ADHD shows up – so that you’ll get education and we hope some clarity around what you are dealing with, so you’ll know some new strategies.

In case you have not seen any of our announcements on social media, here is one post. Below this is more information about ADHD and sensitivity, to get you thinking before the Facebook Live conversation.

High Sensitivity

Elaine Aron began this field in 1991 with her studies of highly sensitive people and challenges they wrestle with. A self-test, well researched, is here, on Dr. Aron’s site. I look forward to talking more with Linda about some of this.

Linda Binns also focuses on our energy and how it impacts us, for example your energy around money and its impact on how you deal with financial challenges. Or take a look at this wonderful post from her Instagram page (@LindaBinns). I LOVE this and it’s timely as I recover from surgery.  Also look at her hashtags because they connect self care to what it can do for us.

ADHD & Sensitivity

ADDitude is a go-to site for all things ADHD. Here is what the experts have to say:

“Hypersensitivity — also known as being a “highly sensitive person” (HSP) — is not a disorder. It is an attribute common in people with ADHD. Symptoms of hypersensitivity include being highly sensitive to physical (via sound, sigh, touch, or smell) and or emotional stimuli and the tendency to be easily overwhelmed by too much information.”  Article link: ADDitude site.

If you have ADHD, based on what I’ve read and before talking more with Linda on the 29th, you could think of high sensitivity as another filter, just as we have filters for information or crowds or emotions. Filters are sometimes strong, but for many with ADHD, they are inconsistent or require strategies to manage the incoming flood.

As always, the point of this kind of discussion is not to label. It is to understand: what might be perfectly normal for someone with ADHD and/or HSP (validation); to understand what needs to be managed so you feel less at a disadvantage (management strategies); and ways to improve your self care, which is the foundation of strong mental, physical, spiritual and emotional health.
